The Accelerate Water and Agricultural Resource Efficiency (AWARE) Programme was launched in February 2019 to promote effective water resources management and therefore support increased agriculture productivity among smallholder farmers. It aims to improve climate-smart water resource management and agricultural water use efficiency for smallholder farmers in the Lower Kafue Sub-Catchment while maintaining a gender-sensitive strategy. The overall purpose of this baseline survey was to assess smallholders’ knowledge and application of water harvesting storage and irrigation.
A mixed-techniques approach was used it included a variety of quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. A household survey, documents review, Key Informant Interviews (KIIs), and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) were used to gather data. Other techniques, such as observations, were utilized to validate some of the responses where necessary. The tools were created to reflect all relevant output and outcome-level indicators. To get a better understanding of current farming techniques as well as water management practices, the survey team interviewed 1,154 smallholder farmers (Household head) against a sample size of 1,100 smallholder farmers. From the 1,154 smallholder farmers captured, 908 were male-headed households’ while 246 were female-headed households.
